Fleet Focus: Why Winter Recon Matters

By Greg Franklin, VP of Fleet, Facilities, and Safety

Our fleet is more than just a collection of trucks and equipment — it’s a reflection of our brand, our professionalism, and our commitment to excellence. With more than a thousand vehicles on the road, and countless pieces of machinery operating across multiple branches and regions, maintaining that standard takes planning, investment, and a lot of teamwork.

Each year, when the pace of field work slows down, our shop teams shift gears into one of the most important operational initiatives we do companywide: Winter Recon.

What Is Winter Recon?

Winter Recon (short for “reconditioning”) is our comprehensive, company-wide program to inspect, repair, and refresh our fleet before spring operations ramp up. Every truck, trailer, mower, and piece of equipment hauled in our trailers gets a full review. Shop teams across our branches collaborate with the Fleet department to assess each vehicle’s condition — from engine performance and safety systems to bodywork, paint, decals, and interior cleanliness. The goal is to return every piece of equipment to “like new” condition so it’s ready to perform reliably and present a professional image to our customers.

This process takes a major commitment of time and resources. For some vehicles, that might mean a few minor touch-ups; for others, it could mean over a week of repair work and refinishing. Across our fleet, that adds up to thousands of labor hours and a considerable financial commitment. It’s a big lift, but it’s one that pays off throughout the year in reliability, safety, and pride of ownership.

Why It’s Worth the Effort

Winter Recon isn’t just about keeping things looking nice, though presentation is an important part of it. It’s a strategic investment in our image, safety, and cost of ownership:

  • Professional Image: Our trucks and equipment are mobile billboards. When they’re clean, well-maintained, and properly branded, they reflect the professionalism our customers associate with Ruppert.
  • Safety and Reliability: A well-maintained fleet means fewer breakdowns, safer operation, and less downtime, all of which contribute to consistent service.
  • Cost Control: Preventive maintenance and timely repairs extend the lifespan of our vehicles and reduce expensive emergency repairs or premature replacements, saving money that can be reinvested in our people and operations.

A Reflection of Our Culture

What makes Winter Recon so important isn’t just the work itself, it’s what it represents. It’s about ownership, teamwork, and attention to detail. Each branch takes pride in its equipment, and every associate who drives a truck or runs a mower plays a role in keeping it in top shape. That mindset — caring for what we have and striving to make it better — is part of what sets Ruppert apart. Our customers notice it, and so do our peers in the industry.

Looking Ahead

As we continue to grow, the scale of our fleet and the complexity of managing it will only increase. But the principles behind our Recon process remain constant: take care of what we have, make good use of our slower months, present our best image, and make smart, long-term investments in our people and our equipment.

Fleet management isn’t glamorous work, but it’s foundational to who we are. Every freshly recon’d truck on the road is a moving reminder of Ruppert’s commitment to quality, stewardship, and pride in everything we do. It’s hard work, but it’s the kind of work that keeps Ruppert running strong.
