University of Maryland Southwest Campus

Overview

The University of Maryland in College Park is a major public research university located on 1,250 acres of rolling land along the Baltimore-Washington corridor. The university’s plan for building a strong culture of excellence centers around its ability to attract and retain gifted students and faculty, a key component of which is to develop the university’s physical facilities so that they meet the needs and expectations of a leading research university. To that end, Ruppert Landscape has been engaged in several campus renovations, including the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center and the Southwest Campus, designed to enhance existing areas and create a comfortable learning environment with amenities that encourage students to congregate and enjoy. Among a few of the enhancements were the installation of over 75 large caliper trees (5″ or over), the removal of a parking area and subsequent conversion to a mall-like environment, hardscape work and the creation of an amphitheater.
