Enhancement Spotlight: Episcopal High School

A Memorial Garden Built to Inspire and Endure

Some of the most successful landscape projects begin with a strong relationship. After years of providing landscape maintenance, our team was invited to help transform an underutilized area of a historic campus into a memorial garden designed for reflection, gathering, and remembrance.

What started as a landscape opportunity evolved into a full-site construction project. Serving as general contractor, our team coordinated every phase of construction while delivering the landscape installation that brought the vision to life. The result is a beautiful outdoor destination that students, faculty, alumni, and visitors will enjoy for generations.

A Vision for Reflection and Connection

The goal was to create a memorial garden that honored its purpose while providing a functional outdoor space for everyday campus life. The design called for a balance of natural beauty, gathering spaces, and architectural features that complemented the surrounding landscape and showcased the site’s scenic pond.

Executing the project required close coordination among multiple specialty trades while maintaining a consistent schedule, quality standards, and clear communication throughout construction.

Managing the Project from the Ground Up

Rather than focusing solely on the landscape installation, our team managed the project from construction through final planting, overseeing each phase to ensure every element worked together seamlessly. Major site features included:

  • A gazebo overlooking the pond
  • Pedestrian bridge and fishing pier
  • Decorative fountain
  • Retaining walls
  • Flagstone patios and gathering spaces
  • Granite boulder seating and decorative pillars
  • A 27-zone irrigation system

Bringing the Landscape to Life

The planting plan created year-round interest while establishing a mature landscape that will continue to grow over time. Together, these elements transformed what had been an open space into a welcoming garden with inviting pathways, comfortable gathering areas, and vibrant seasonal color. Installation included:

  • 75 trees
  • 450 shrubs
  • More than 8,000 perennials
  • Over 9,000 square feet of sod
  • Complete irrigation installation
  • Final grading and mulching

The Value of Long-Term Partnerships

One of the most rewarding aspects of this project was how it grew from an existing maintenance relationship. Years of consistently caring for the campus built the trust needed for the client to confidently expand the partnership into a major capital improvement project.

Serving as general contractor allowed a single team to coordinate construction, specialty trades, and landscape installation, creating a streamlined process and a cohesive finished product.

A Lasting Campus Landmark

Today, the completed memorial garden provides a peaceful setting where students, faculty, alumni, and visitors can gather, reflect, and enjoy the surrounding landscape. From the bridge and gazebo to the fountain, gardens, and pond views, every feature contributes to an outdoor space designed for both remembrance and everyday use.

Projects like this demonstrate how thoughtful planning, skilled craftsmanship, and trusted partnerships can transform a vision into a lasting destination that will serve a community for many years to come.
